Drywall Finishing & Taping in Huntington, WV | Level 4 & Level 5 Finishes
Hanging drywall is carpentry. Drywall finishing is the trade. The taping, three coats of compound, feathering, and sanding that turn a room of seams into one flat surface are where most drywall goes wrong, and where Drywall Repair Huntington spends most of its day. We finish board we hung, board the builder hung, and board a homeowner hung on a weekend and then thought better of.
We quote the finish level in writing using the Gypsum Association’s GA-214 definitions, so "finished" means something specific rather than whatever the crew felt like that day.

Level 4: the standard residential finish
Tape embedded in compound, two more coats over tape and fasteners, corners and bead coated, all sanded smooth. Level 4 is right for flat or eggshell paint in normal light and is what most Huntington bedrooms, halls, and living rooms get. It is also the finish included in our per-square-foot installation price.
Level 5: skim coat for critical light and gloss paint
Level 5 adds a thin skim coat of compound across the entire surface, not just the joints, so the paper and the compound absorb paint the same way. You want it in rooms with big south-facing windows, under semi-gloss or gloss paint, on ceilings with recessed lights, and anywhere a dark color is going. It costs more per square foot and it is the difference between a nice wall and a wall nobody notices.
Skim coating textured or damaged walls smooth
The same skim-coat skill turns a textured wall smooth or rescues a wall that has been patched into a moonscape. We scrape high points, apply two or three thin coats, and sand to flat. It is popular in renovated Southside homes where owners want smooth walls without tearing out plaster, and after popcorn ceiling removal.
Dust control
Sanding is where finishing earns its reputation for mess. We hang plastic at doorways, run a vacuum-attached sander for the bulk of the work, and wet-sponge final passes near finished floors and trim. You should not be wiping grit off the countertops a week after we leave.
Questions about Drywall Finishing & Taping
What is the difference between level 4 and level 5 drywall finish?
Level 4 finishes the joints and fasteners and is standard for flat paint in normal light. Level 5 adds a full skim coat over the whole surface for gloss paint, dark colors, and rooms with strong side light.
Do you finish drywall that someone else hung?
Yes. We tape and finish board hung by builders, remodelers, and homeowners. We will point out any hanging problems that will affect the finish before we start.
How long does finishing take?
Each coat needs to dry, so a typical room is three to four visits over a week, or faster with setting-type compound when the schedule demands it.
